Phasing In Outdoor Events
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced recently as part of the plan to reopen the country, Outdoor Events can once again be held from June 29th. The numbers allowed attend an Outdoor Event from June 29th is 200. That restriction will stay in place until July 20th. From that date onwards the numbers allowed at an Outdoor Event will increase to 500. We do expect at a later stage that that number will increase from 500 up to a much higher number.
We have been inundated with calls over the last few weeks with regard to pop up drive in cinemas. We have explained to everyone who has contacted us, the costs and work that that goes into operating a drive in cinema, especially as a one off. A licence is required from the BAI so you can play the soundtrack over the car stereos. It can take between 2 and 3 months to get the licence which costs over €1,000. You are also restricted to the number of cars you can accommodate. And, if your sitting in the back seat of the car your view is restricted. Trust us. We ran a Drive In Cinema in Dun Laoghaire, Kilkenny and Roundwood and we can safely tell you that as a fund raiser or a commercial venture its not worth it. Steer clear of it. We can already see some new Drive In Cinemas cancelling screenings already for a number of reasons. Some of them are doing too many screenings in the one week, some are picking the wrong films and as a result not getting the numbers to cover their costs and finally they are popping up everywhere making it very competitive for them.
The best fund raising/commercial outdoor event you can host is a pop up outdoor cinema. They are easy to organise and with the right team behind you to promote it, it can be very profitable. Cinemas indoors are still going to struggle with social distancing in place for a while. Even if the 2m rule is changed to 1m, cinemas will still find it hard. The best cinema events will now be held outdoors at a pop up event. On top of that, the who country wants to go to the movies again!
A lot of you guys have worked with us before so you know how good these events are. For those of you who haven't an are thinking about it, visit our website and you can check out our screens and our prices. Everything is very transparent so you will have no problem working out how much it would cost to host an outdoor event. With regard to social distancing, it can easily be achieved with the help of volunteers and good common sense.
Whether its a small gathering in your family home, a screening for the guest at your hotel or for a large event at your local GAA Club, we have a screen that suits every event.
We are heavily booked from July onwards so it is advisable to get your booking in as soon as you can. For those of you who already have bookings with us, we look forward to seeing you over the coming weeks and months

It's really important to note that in order to run a successful outdoor screening you must have dusk or darkness. A screening in daylight is just not possible, even with our most powerful cinema projectors. For an outdoor screening during day light hours you would need to use an LED screen. These screens are extremely expensive to hire but if you do have the funds to hire an LED screen (they can be up to €2,000 a day), we highly recommend a company called Mongeys. You can visit their website here
In order for you to find out what time you can screen on the date you have in mind you should visit this website. When you visit this website use the tabs to select the month you want to screen. Down the left hand side of the screen you will see the dates for that particular month. On the columns on the top of the chart you want to look for the column marked Nautical Twilight End. This is the time that you will be able to screen from. In the example below you will see that if we were looking to do a screening on February 14th, ideally we should be looking at screening any time after 1810.
You need a licence to screen a film in public either indoors or outdoors. It doesn't matter if you are trying to raise funds or the event is for charity you must pay the appropriate licence fee.
Under Republic of Ireland Copyright Law, if you wish to screen of a film to audiences outside of the cinema or their home circle (known as non-theatrical film screenings), you must acquire the consent of the copyright owner or their representatives before doing so. Film copyright ownership is generally held by the film studio or distributor (that has produced the film). OutdoorMovies.ie prices do NOT include copyright licence fees which can vary depending on whether or not your event is a commercial or non commercial event.
If your event is a non commercial event OutdoorMovies.ie can apply for a licence for you which is typically around €205 inc VAT (depending on your potential audience size). If your event is a commercial event OutdoorMovies.ie can advise what the procedures are to obtain a commercial licence. It is relatively straight forward and not at all complicated. Typically the film agent will look for 35% of your box office
If you intend screening movies in your own home, a licence is not required for these sorts of screenings.
